Silver Lining

In July 2005, a soldier was punished by the Israel army for his actions in Gaza.

An Israeli soldier who refused to help demolish settler buildings in the Gaza Strip has been sentenced to jail. A military commander jailed Cpl Avi Bieber, 19, for 56 days in a case that is being seen as an indication of how the Israeli army will treat dissenters.

Yesterday, the the Israeli army saw fit to punish another soldier for something that happened in Gaza.

A former Israeli soldier is to serve 45 days in prison on charges in connection with the deaths of a Palestinian mother and daughter who were shot while waving white flags during the three-week war in Gaza in 2008-09.

It makes one wonder if the self-styled Most Moral Army In The World™ has a problem with impunity…

Reporters Without Borders has on many occasions asked…

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright should be a happy camper: Another campaign of sanctions and embargoes by the US is about to start killing children, this time in Iran.

Albright, as President Bill Clinton’s Secretary of State, when interviewed on CBS’s news magazine program “60 Minutes” back in 2000, was asked by reporter Lesley Stahl about reports that US sanctions on Iraq had led to the deaths of some 500,000 Iraqi children because of shortages of medicine and things like chlorine for treating water supplies. Stahl asked Albright if such a dreadful toll was “worth it.”  Albright famously responded, “I think this is a very hard choice, but the price–we think the price is worth it.”

Albright must be happy then that apparently the same kind of heartless logic is at work once more, this time orchestrated by the Obama administration and the current…

GAZA, (PIC)– Economist Dr. Maher Al Tabbaa affirmed that the sudden closure of the Gaza tunnels without opening the commercial crossings and without lifting the siege will cause huge economic losses in Gaza.

Al Tabbaa called, in an article on Monday, for ending the siege and the hardships caused by the imposed use of tunnels, stressing that using the tunnels will only end after opening all commercial crossings to allow the entry of all kinds of goods to the Strip.

He pointed out that the decrease in prices of building material incoming through tunnels has contributed in increasing residential buildings, implementing some projects and increasing the percentage of workers in the construction sector, and thus, significantly decreasing the unemployment rate.

The economist stressed that the tunnels, whose number exceeds 1200, have become the only alternative option available for bringing goods to Gaza, noting…

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli bulldozers uprooted agricultural land in the Bethlehem village of al-Khader on Monday, a local committee said.

Ahmad Salah, spokesman for the local committee against the wall and settlements, told Ma’an that five dunams of private Palestinian land were leveled in al-Absiyya, near the settlement of Elazar.

Olive trees and a well belonging to Riziq Muhammad Hussein Salah were also destroyed.

Settlers led by a female leader then stole several uprooted olive trees and took them away in trucks, Salah said.

“Her name is Nadia Matar the founder of the settler group known as women in green. This group maintains that all hills in the Etzion area must be under settler control to build religious schools and parks,” he added.

Last week, Israeli forces moved part of a military checkpoint near al-Khader, witnesses said.

Eyewitnesses told Ma’an that a checkpoint…

GAZA, (PIC)– Palestinian minister of interior Fathi Hammad said the current closure of Rafah border crossing has made the humanitarian situation in Gaza worsen, especially after the Egyptian authorities destroyed the tunnels there.

In a press release on Monday, Hammad appealed to Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi to take urgent action to open Rafah crossing in both directions to save the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

“We had been suffering from the injustice of Mubarak regime which was an accomplice in the blockade on Gaza through the repeated closure of the crossing, so why do we still suffer today in the era of revolutionary and democratic Egypt?” the interior minister emphasized.

In this regard, spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt Mahmoud Ghazlan said that his organization would never accept any measure to tighten the blockade on Gaza and stressed the need for not hastening…

AL-KHALIL, (PIC)– The Israeli occupation army allowed Jewish settlers to use a water pond in the area of Tel Rumeida, in the center of al-Khalil province, although it is registered as an Islamic endowment.

Youth against Settlement group said in a statement on Sunday that the occupation army issued a decision preventing Palestinians from using the new spring of water in Tel Rumeida during Fridays and Saturdays, while allowing the settlers to daily use it without any restrictions.

For his part, the Director of Endowments in al-Khalil, Zaid Al-Jabari asserted in press statements that the new spring of water and water ponds in Tel Rumeida have been registered as Islamic endowments.

He also noted that the new spring of water, which has an area of 55 square meters, has been exposed to continuous attacks as the settlers have been trying to control it…

Boeing engineers have successfully demonstrated new technology that enables drones to function like a ‘swarm of insects’ where they can communicate and carry out tasks in mid-air.

In June, engineers and researchers from Johns Hopkins University tested their technology on two ScanEagle drones in Oregon, Boeing revealed.

The drone development could lead to lower costs and less risk in military welfare, Boeing said in a statement.

Using just a military radio and a laptop, an operator on the ground was able to connect with the autonomous drones instructing them to carry out a mission simultaneously.

‘This swarm technology may one day enable warfighters in battle to request and receive time-critical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information directly from airborne (unmanned aerial vehicles) much sooner than they can from ground control stations today,’ Gabriel Santander, Boeing’s program director of advanced autonomous networks, said.

The biggest banks in the US have been given advisement by US regulators that they must make plans to stave off a complete financial collapse without relying on the US government. Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and other technocrats have secretly crafted worst-case scenarios in which they can continue to thrive during a full-blown domestic monetary crisis.

The Federal Reserve and the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) named Citigroup Inc., Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co. as well as others to devise “recovery plans” in 2010. Banks were directed to have schemes to remain afloat by selling off assets, finding alternative sources of funding, reducing risky measures that make a quick buck. These strategies were to be perfected with “no assumption of extraordinary support from the public sector.”

Resolution plans, required under the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law describe how…
