Trigger warning: Proceed with caution.

The verdict is in for the two Steubenville teens that CNN seems to feel sorry for. Twitter is a mixture of rape apologists and people angry at said apologists. Facebook is probably still all cat pictures or shamrocks and Pinterest, I’m sure, is still largely flowers, baking, and projects even Martha Stewart wouldn’t try. At any rate, here are my two cents:
image

I’ve spent the past seven years listening to teen girls tell me or tell each other about being raped, molested, or assaulted. It’s so often a gateway to their criminal or drug activity. I’ve also heard too many times about their stripping, hooking, drug use, and older “boyfriends” who are sometimes encouraged to “date” them by their own mothers. This is not technically part of my job description. It falls into that category of being there for the students and trying to find out…

Make Me a Sammich

Trigger Warning: This post is about rape.

dontbethatguyI was fourteen years old the night my friend G took me to my first kegger. We told my mom we were going to “a little get together.” I remember almost nothing about the evening—flashes, mostly. I remember absolutely nothing about being raped that night.

I might never have known about it, except that N–a woman I’d met the night before–mentioned it casually the next morning when I woke in a strange house with what might have been my first hangover. I don’t remember the words she used, just the image they evokedof me passed out in a bed and two men doing whatever they wanted with me.

Apparently G had left me at the party—I never learned why, but I assume that I was either passed out or otherwise resisted leaving. I never asked him. Sitting there with N that morning, I…

This is the 2nd of fifteen articles in CDLS’ ‘Spotlight On…’ series

Previous : Cyprus

Quick disclaimer here: I didn’t mean for this article to get as long as it did. It sort of ran away from me.

If you ask Colin, he will tell you that I have been dying to post an article on North Korea for weeks. Every week I’ll work on one and I’ll tell him that this is finally the week I’ll post it. I sit down and write a paragraph and then I scrap it. I hate every approach I have taken to write about this topic and nothing I write interests me.

When it comes to North Korea, people quickly tend to fall into two camps: first the North Korea is crazy and is a parody of a cartoon super villain threatening everybody with nuclear attacks, camp. And there is the camp that says…

As American President Barack Obama hailed the ‘resounding success’ of Israel’s US-financed Iron Dome antimissile system on the first of his tour there, missile experts have newly unveiled that Iron Dome’s success rate during the regime’s November war on Gaza was as low as zero.

While Obama used his Wednesday’s tour of an Iron Dome installation, “celebrating a technological wonder built with the help of American dollars” and seeking to showcase US support of the Zionist regime, there was no mention about the “intensifying debate” on whether the promotion of the system’s success rate was “more illusory than real,” says a The New York Times article on Thursday.

Contrary to Israeli claims that Iron Dome’s success rate in destroying incoming Palestinian rockets during the regime’s massive military strikes against the blockaded Gaza strip was 90 percent, studies by weapons experts in the US and Israel suggest that the…

At least 56 people have been killed in a series of attacks across Baghdad. The deadly assaults come as Iraq marks ten years since the coalition, led by the US and Britain, invaded the country with their ‘freedom and democracy’ mission. Historian and political campaigner, Tariq Ali, says it’s surprising that no-one has been held responsible for creating havoc in Iraq.

The Extinction Protocol

March 19, 2013NORTH KOREAUnited States B-52 bombers carried out simulated nuclear bombing raids on North Korea, as part of ongoing U.S.-South Korean military exercises, Pentagon officials said on Monday. Pentagon press secretary George Little told reporters that B-52 bombers from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, conducted a training mission over South Korea March 8 during war games known as Exercise Foal Eagle. “It’s not any secret that we are in the midst of sending a very strong signal that we have a firm commitment to the alliance with our South Korean allies,” Little said. Deputy defense secretary Ashton Carter said during a visit to South Korea on Monday that the bomber flights are part of the U.S. “extended deterrence”—the use of U.S. nuclear forces to deter North Korea, which conducted its third underground nuclear test Feb. 12. “I should note the presence of strategic bombers taking…

The Extinction Protocol

March 19, 2013RIO DE JANEIROLandslides triggered by heavy rains have killed 16 people over the past 24 hours in the Brazilian tourist town of Petropolis, an official said Monday. “We are in a state of maximum alert,” Rio state governor Sergio Cabral told a news conference in Petropolis, a former imperial capital located 68 kilometers (42 miles) north of Rio de Janeiro, as he updated the death toll from 10. He urged residents to leave high risk areas and to seek refuge in shelters provided by city authorities amid worsening downpours. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, in Rome to attend Tuesday’s installment of Pope Francis, called Cabral to offer federal help to deal with the impact of the flooding, her office said. Among the victims are two civil defense officials who took part in rescue efforts, Sergio Simoes, the Rio state civil defense secretary, told Globo television…

The evidence is now in, as list of state actors can now be seen openly conspiring to drive the Middle East into full-blown war.

It’s well known by now that NATO and the Gulf States initial plans to overturn the sovereign state of Syria has been running behind schedule since their operation was launched two years ago. They had hoped for the sort of slam dunk which they enjoyed in overturning the country of Libya in late 2011.

This same formula could not be applied again however, so Plan B, a ground war using proxies has meant a longer drawn out conflict. It hasn’t been working fast enough in Syria, and western backed terrorist groups still sustaining heavy losses in their fight to topple the Assad government on behalf of the NATO and its Gulf allies.

The main obstacle with Plan B is that…

British and French instructors are training militants in Jordan to fight against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a British newspaper says.

On Friday, The Guardian quoted Jordanian security sources as saying that the training program, which started last year, is led by the United States.

“It’s the Americans, Brits and French with some of the Syrian generals who defected. But we’re not talking about a huge operation,” a Jordanian source said.

He noted that the trainees are still waiting for a “green light” to be dispatched to the northern Syrian city of Daraa.

A European diplomat has implicitly confirmed the report.

“As is normal, before any major decision is taken on this issue, the preparations are made so that when that decision is taken, everything is in place for it to go smoothly. That is what these groups [special forces] do. They…
