RIO DE JANEIRO – Police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets at anti-World Cup protesters who clashed violently with riot police at a rally near the Maracanã stadium in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, as the tournament final between Germany and Argentina was about to kick off.

As well as voicing anger over World Cup spending by the government, protesters also demanded an end to what they see as police repression and denounced the preemptive arrests of 37 protesters ahead of the rally.

The rally was held 1.2km from the stadium, and a mixture of military, riot and mounted police forces heavily outnumbered the 300 protesters present, some of whom identified themselves as from the anarchic “Black Bloc” movement.

Palestinians wounded in IOF crack down on protesters

RAMALLAH, (PIC)– Israeli occupation forces (IOF) fired bullets and teargas canisters at Palestinian protestors near the Ofer jail west of Ramallah on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses told the PIC that a number of Palestinians were treated for breathing difficulty after the IOF soldiers used teargas intensively to disperse them.

The demonstrators were demanding the immediate release of Ibrahim Abu Hajle, who was re-arrested after his release in the Wafa Al-Ahrar prisoners’ exchange deal between Hamas and Israel in October last year, the eyewitnesses said.

They said that participants also declared solidarity with all Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation jails.

Bahraini people have staged protest rallies across the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom in a show of solidarity with female political prisoners.

On Monday night, Bahraini protesters took to the streets in more than 21 districts across the country, and condemned the Al Khalifa regime’s crackdown on peaceful protests.

Shouting slogans in support of political prisoners, they demanded an immediate and unconditional release of women protesters held in jail, including senior human rights activist Zainab al-Khawaja.

They also condemned Bahrain’s Supreme Council for Women for its silence for the continued detention of female activists and the violation of their rights.

The demonstrators blocked main streets by burning tires and called for unity among the Bahraini nation. Our might lies in our solidarity, they chanted.

Bahraini security forces rushed to disperse the protests by firing teargas, rubber bullets and birdshot pellets at the demonstrators.

The Saudi-backed regime forces also attacked…
