(NaturalNews) A woman who bought a bottle of Nestle’s Pure Life Water says she was threatened repeatedly by a company customer service representative who allegedly told her she would “slice her throat” and “watch the blood drain from you” after the woman called with questions about the product.

As a result of the alleged threats, Shimrit Ellis, the customer, filed suit against Pamela Vaughan, the customer service rep, and the company, Nestle USA, as well as Answernet Inc., in Philadelphia.

According to court documents, Ellis claims she bought the water on Aug. 5, 2012, then called Nestle’s customer service department to inquire about health issues related to fluoride.

“Shortly thereafter, plaintiff, Shimrit Ellis, started to receive very graphic and violent death threats by phone from an unknown female,” the complaint states.

“By way of example, inter alia, some of the treats [sic] that…

Regular readers know that Natural News has been closely watching a situation in Portland, Ore., where city officials are pushing to add dangerous fluoride to the water.

City officials in Portland have done everything they can – openly and behind closed doors – to force residents of both the city and the surrounding area to accept fluoridation, though the citizenry has obviously been getting along just fine without it.

A similar battle was being waged much further east, in Wichita, Kan., but the voters there put a stake through the heart of that effort on Election Day, voting to reject fluoridation of that city’s water supply.

There, 59 percent of voters soundly rejected the initiative, sending a message loud and clear that they aren’t prepared to allow city officials to force such a dangerous substance literally down their throats – despite…

GAZA, (PIC)– A new UN reported warned that the crisis of the polluted and unclean water in the Gaza Strip is getting worse and seriously affecting the civilians’ health.

Gaza’s rapidly growing population of about 1. 64 million, which is expected to increase by 500, 000 by 2020, could soon lose its main source of fresh water from the underground coastal aquifer, which could become unusable by 2016 and sustain irreversible damage by 2020, the report said.

Clean water is limited for most Gazans to an average of 70 to 90 liters per person per day, compared to the minimum global world health organization (WHO) standard of 100 liters a day, according to Mahmoud Daher, officer in charge of the WHO in Gaza.

“We have respiratory diseases, skin diseases, eye diseases, gastroenteritis, which can all be linked to polluted water,” said Mohamed Al-Kashef…

Carcinogenic hexavalent chromium found in one-third of California’s drinking water

(NaturalNews) A third of all drinking water sampled in California is contaminated with hexavalent chromium, a carcinogen, say environmental groups in a lawsuit targeting the state’s Department of Public Health.

In their suit, the National Resources Defense Council, along with the Environmental Working Group, contend that the Legislature ordered the state’s top health agency to develop drinking water standards for the carcinogen by January 2004, but so far the department has declined to do so. The suit claims the delay is unjustified and is asking the court to impose a faster deadline.

“Made famous by the 2000 film ‘Erin Brockovich,’ hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen and drinking water contaminant,” the complaint says. “At least one-third of drinking water sources sampled statewide – sources that provide drinking water to tens of millions of Californians – are contaminated with hexavalent chromium concentrations higher than those that the state deems to pose no significant health risk.”

Continuing, the suit says, “More than a decade after the Legislature ordered the Department to act, and more than eight years after the statutory deadline for action passed, the Department has not even proposed a hexavalent chromium drinking water standard. The Department presently estimates on its website that it will not publish a final drinking water standard for hexavalent chromium for at least another two to three years.”

Forced to act by the real-life Brockovich

The agency’s failure to develop standards is creating a public health nuisance and endangering residents and visitors, say the groups.

Hexavalent chromium is a heavy metal that is also known as chromium-6. It’s used in pigment and paint production, tanning, stainless steel welding and other things, and it’s been found in two-thirds’ of the nation’s Superfund environmental clean-up sites.

“Hexavalent chromium enters the drinking water supply through surface water runoff from industrial operations and soil leachate conveyed into groundwater,” says the suit. “People may be exposed to hexavalent chromium by drinking contaminated water, eating contaminated food, inhaling polluted air, and contacting contaminated soils.”

Coming primarily from industrial pollution, exposure can cause cancer, liver problems, stomach ulcers and lesions, and lower sperm counts, reports said. It can also occur naturally, however.

The state Legislature directed the health department to act after the real-life Brockovich exposed the case of Pacific Gas & Electric Corp., which stood accused of leaking the chemical into the groundwater of Hinckley, a small town in the Mojave Desert about 122 miles northwest of Los Angeles, which caused health problems, including cancer.

On its website, the department said in a July 27, 2011 announcement it established a Public Health Goal (PHG) of 0.02 parts per billion (ppb) for hexavalent chromium, the so-called “Erin Brockovic Chemical.” “The health-protective level is based on avoidance of potential carcinogenic effects,” the announcement said.

Nevertheless, say plaintiffs, a third of all drinking water sources tested in the state have hexavalent chromium concentrations of at least one part per billion.

Plaintiffs to court: Set a date for compliance

“A hexavalent chromium concentration of one part per billion is fifty times the public health goal. Upon information and belief, many more drinking water sources in California contain hexavalent chromium at levels below one part per billion, but above the PHG [public health goal] for hexavalent chromium,” says the complaint.

According to the Huffington Post, the highest concentrations were reported in southern California, including in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Santa Barbara counties.

Plaintiffs maintain that the state health department could have met its 2004 deadline if officials had given it more effort than less-important tasks. The groups called the delay in fixing standards “unreasonable and unjustified,” as well as a violation of the state’s Health & Safety Code.

The groups have asked the court to compel the department to set drinking water standards “on a date set by the court that will ensure speedy performance of the statutory duty.”

The Environmental Protection Agency, by the way, has not set federal contamination levels for chromium-6, though the agency last year released recommendations for monitoring the chemical in water tables and is further considering whether to set nationwide chromium-6 standards.

AL-KHALIL, (PIC)– The Israeli occupation army allowed Jewish settlers to use a water pond in the area of Tel Rumeida, in the center of al-Khalil province, although it is registered as an Islamic endowment.

Youth against Settlement group said in a statement on Sunday that the occupation army issued a decision preventing Palestinians from using the new spring of water in Tel Rumeida during Fridays and Saturdays, while allowing the settlers to daily use it without any restrictions.

For his part, the Director of Endowments in al-Khalil, Zaid Al-Jabari asserted in press statements that the new spring of water and water ponds in Tel Rumeida have been registered as Islamic endowments.

He also noted that the new spring of water, which has an area of 55 square meters, has been exposed to continuous attacks as the settlers have been trying to control it…

Gulu

Former internally displaced people who have returned to their homes in Gulu District are facing shortage of clean drinking water, Daily Monitor has learnt.

In an interview over the weekend, the chairman of Palaro Sub-county in Gulu, Mr David Ngole, said women walk for over 15 kilometres in search of drinking water. Mr Ngole urged the government to intervene immediately, adding that any delay could severely frustrate resettlement efforts in the war battered district.

Danger

“They are exposed to rapists at night and snake bites as they travel in the bush in search of water,” he added. Mr Ngole added that water sources in villages like Abwoc Bel, Wipolo, Owalo and Kalali dried up when people were still in the camps.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Works and Technical Services, Mr Alex Otim, said some women are forced to collect rain water from mud ponds. “Some of them drink unsafe water and this exposes them to risks of getting bilharzia,” Mr Otim said. He added that the council would make provision of safe water and roads a priority.

Official figures indicate that in Gulu District alone, over 85 per cent of former displaced persons have returned home and several camps have been closed. The Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency displaced thousands of people in northern and eastern Uganda and forced them into camps.
